Counseling for Vision Loss
Vision loss can have a profound effect on the way a person adapts to
the demands of daily life, personal relationships, and educational and
vocational goals. It also
impacts the dynamic interrelationships of family structure and
support. Each person reacts
differently to these challenges, and therapy must be tailored to the unique
needs and strengths of the client.
Depression and anxiety may be an understandable part of reaction to
the challenges of loss of vision,
In addition to addressing these, therapy can also deal with
cultivating adaptive behaviors, developing strategies that make use of
client strengths, identifying resources, and establishing a network of
support. Couple therapy and
family therapy can help partners and other family members navigate the
challenges and opportunities within close personal relationships.
I have worked with vision loss and visual impairment for many years,
along with other disabilities. I have presented at national conferences on
the impact of progressive vision loss and other genetically determined
symptoms on individual mental health and family dynamics, and have designed
and facilitated support sessions for individuals with visual impairment
created by Bardet-Biedl syndrome.
